HON 1010C Lecture 3: The Apology (Defense of Socrates)
Document Summary
The apology (the defense of socrates) by: plato. Page references correspond to the book, great dialogues of plato, translation by w. h: rouse. Overview: socrates has been put on trial and is delivering his own defense. Socrates has been brought up on two actual charges for this trial: corrupting young men, not believing in gods of the state, but rather in other spiritual things. Socrates comes up with a reason why he believes these false accusations have been made against him. At one time, chairephon went to the oracle of delphi and asked who was the wisest man. As a result, socrates went around to the men he thought were wiser only to discover that they were not as wise as he thought. These men were statesmen, craftsmen, and playwrights and were understandably angered by socrates statements, which is why socrates believes they brought these charges against him.
