Geriatric medicine is a special sector of the medical field that focuses on the health and quality of life in elderly people. This type of medicine not only promotes health by preventing and treating ailments and diseases, but it helps elderly people create an aging plan that allows them to remain independent longer while maintaining a high quality of life. This topic hits home for me because all four of my grandparents are still alive and are starting to approach the age where they are seeing health problems and needing more health care. My general thoughts on this topic now were similar to many points that were brought up in the slucare geriatric video. None of my grandparents have sought health care from an actual geriatric specialist, so they all have just been seeing general primary care physicians or very specific specialists for their specific ailment.
