Believes that there is a woman living inside of the yellow wallpaper. Practical, has little patience for faith, does not believe in anything that can"t be seen or felt. He believes that he is always right, must have the last say. Diagnosed with hysteria; women of the time were often diagnosed with this. Hsyteria = greek idol; hysteria = ovaries. Pattern wasn"t necessarily ugly, it was just complex. Represents women and their gender roles; but if you take a closer look, then you will see the complexity of it all. John"s wife peels it off in order to take apart patriarchy; wants to be active rather than passive. When john opened the door, he saw the reality of his situation.
