Document Summary
Social cognition: how people think about themselves and the social world; includes how they select, interpret, remember, and use social info. Quick and automatic (ex: making first impressions within seconds, jamming on the breaks without thinking) More effortful and deliberate (ex: thinking about whether you should break up with your bf for hours, etc) Automatic thinking: thinking that is nonconscious, unintentional, involuntary, and effortless. Automatic thinking helps us understand new situations by relating them to our prior experiences. Schemas: mental structures that organize our knowledge about the social world. Influences the info we notice, think about, and remember. Accessibility: extent to which schemas and concepts are at the forefront of the mind and are used when making judgments about the social world. Constantly ready for use: some schemas are accessible due to past experience, some schemas can be accessible because it"s related to a current goal, can be temporarily accessible because of our recent experiences.
