PSYCH 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Primitive Reflexes, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky
PSYC 1 ~ Week 4 ~ Wednesday
Inborn Skills
• Reflexes are responses that are inborn and do not have to be learned.
• Newborns have reflexes to ensure that they will be fed.
The competent new born
• The rooting reflex, touches newborn cheek will turn to it with open mouth
• The sucking reflex, when it gets thing in mouth will suck
• Crying when hungry → cry right sounds to get fed
More Inborn Abilities
• Newborns (one hour old!) will look twice as long at the image on the left.
• In born to like things that look like faces
• What can we conclude from this behavior?
o Ability to distinguish face like patterns from dots and lines

Sensorimotor Stage (From Birth to Age 2)
• In the sensorimotor stage, children explore by looking, hearing, touching, mouthing,
and grasping.
• Explore world through mouth and grasping
• Cool cognitive trick learned at 6 to 8 months: object permanence.
o Idea that objects exist when they can’t be seen
o Peek a boo
o Object under blanket
Emotional Development
Self-Awareness usually emerges around 18 months
9 months not aware baby 20 months baby aware uses me and mine
Self-awareness: realization that one is a distinct individual
(ow do younger and older infants react to the rouge test?
20 → staring at rouge part staring at tongue trying to lick it
younger → reach towards it

Crying when hungry cry right sounds to get fed. In born to like things that look like faces: ability to distinguish face like patterns from dots and lines. 9 months not aware baby 20 months baby aware uses me and mine. 20 staring at rouge part staring at tongue trying to lick it younger reach towards it. Examples of operations that preoperational children (2 6)cannot do yet. Conservation refers to the ability to understand that a quantity is conserved (does not change) even when it is arranged in a different shape. Glass taller more milk because of height. One row more spread out longer row wrong though.
