SOC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Ethnomethodology, Social Actions, Exchange Interaction
Document Summary
This approach to sociology coined by max weber. For weber, to understand a person"s behavior, we must put ourselves in their shoes, within their social context verstehen = sympathetic understanding. In order to understand social action and social interaction, we must take into account 4 aspects: contexts, norms, ethno-methodology, dramaturgy, context 3 elements: place, social environment, and activities surrounding the interaction before during and after. I went to a baseball game, and then out with friends: most of us would understand what that means. It would not be acceptable for us to keep pressing, how was that a great weekend. : example: at home, most of us would not constantly ask for permission for a glass of water. Hence, how the interaction takes place depends on t he particular setting. Cooperative interaction people act together to promote same interests or achieved shared foals (sports team, family, etc) Conflict struggle to achieve something (civil rights for example)
