Antiquarianism is the interest in the past for the monetary value or for its aesthetic value. Has led to many battles over possession of artifacts. Ex: rosetta stone which led to the understanding of egyptian hierclyphics. Is good because it excited interest in material record of the past. Bad because its focus on objects, art mostly, caused irreparable damage to archaeological sites by removing context which ruins scientific info. Today: there are still many people who collect antiquities for their aesthetic or monetary value. Some museums, desirous of high-quality antiquities have been badly conned by skilled producers of replicas of ancient art.
