Document Summary
Moisture deficiency is a necessary but not sufficient element in defining drought. Moisture deficiency is simply a lack of precipitation (evaporation exceeds precipitation). Typically, drought has an adverse impact on a well-defined sector (it has have an big impact on society) Drought can occur anywhere on earth at any time, and can persist for years. A myraid of problems stem from drought (e. g. , water supply, water quality, agriculture, energy production, fire) Drought doesn"t stop at state boundaries and international borders. Water availability is emerging as a critical concern for the 21st century. In some ways, drought it the opposite of extreme precipitation that we discussed a few weeks back. However, drought are rare events, but typically occur over long time periods: weeks to months to years. That being said, droughts are a normal and natural part of the earth system. In some areas they occur seasonally, or nearly all the time!
