Moving the male gametophyte from place to place: The flowers haves tickly or featherlike stigmas, and pollen grains are produced in great numbers. Most angiosperms rely on animals to transfer pollen. Fertilized seed inside the fruit is dispersed by animals as well. But some plants have other mechanisms for seed dispersal. Learning objectives: angiosperms: be able to list and describe 4 evolutionary innovations that allowed angiosperms to become the most dominant plants on earth, be able to identify parts of the angiosperm sexual. Fungi are more closely related to animals (us) than to plants. Fungi in evolutionary context: 3 domains, fungi are eukarya. Animal and choanoflagellates: flagellum, if present, is single and posterior. Penicillin was first discovered by accident (1920s) it is an antibiotic secreted by the fungus penicillium. Antibiotics (1945~) became crucial for treating widespread bacterial infections, such as gangrene, tuberculosis, and syphilis. Many antibiotics are losing their effectiveness as pathogenic bacteria evolve resistance to them.
