Osteocyte: mature, inactive osteoblasts forum in bones that have stopped lengthening. Bones start out as cartilage in a fetus. Growth continues at the ends of long bones in areas known as epiphyseal plate until the end of puberty. Epiphyseal closure occurs when bones stop growing. Bone growth may be restarted after injury.
