Telegraphy marks the moment that communication becomes decoupled from the movement of bodies in space. Telegraphy allows info to move independent of the means of transportation for the first time. A system of conveying info by means of visual signs, aka an (cid:862)optical telegraph(cid:863) Line of sight is critical for system to work. Chappe devised an optical telegraph system and covered france with a network of 556 stations stretching 3000 mi (during french revolution) Able to convey simple messages in a matter of minutes, instead of days. Optical telegraphy systems used throughout 19th cent.
