World has almost 1 trillion tons of reserves: 147 years reserves-to-production. U. s. reserve is about 225 billion tons: u. s. has enough for at least 200 years of total, constant use. Roughly a quarter of the worlds reserves. Emits carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and other pollutants. Carbon capture and storage (ccs: expensive too expensive, storage is still uncertain. Can be used to make syngas = methane: burning coal in the presence of water get carbon and hydrogen together which is methane. Used in nazi germany as a last resort. Integrated gasification combined cycle technology turns coal to syngas, which is burned to run turbines. Mercury and air toxics standards (mats 2011) go into effect in 2015: upheld by supreme court 4/14.
