Document Summary
How to be a part of a party: Register, vote, say you are with the party. But this does not mean you play any clear role in the party. Unless you are a donor maybe or willing to attend multitude of meetings. There is an overall organization to each party. National > state > local (county, city, precinct, ward) Ideology: collection of positions on issues, group of opinions. President, televised activity, most visible party of a party organization candidate. Prepare for the next national convention, every 4 years they nominate candidate for. Run polls to see chances that candidate may win. In theory elected by the committee, but usually selected by the party"s presidential. Have their own budget and set of donations separate from the national committee. Ex: mcdaniel (rnc) > michigan republican state committee. Around 1908: first policies for direct primaries (first in oregon, then other states) Direct primary: decline in power of the local party organization.
