Stranger anxiety: wary or fretful reaction to the approach of an unfamiliar person (8-10mo & Separation anxiety: becomes wary or fretful when separated from attachment figure & appears when forming 1st genuine attachments (peaks at 14-18mo) gradually becomes less frequent and less intense. Facilitates exploratory behavior: attachment figure serves as a secure base for the exploration (light house- point of safety to which a baby can return) Measuring attachment quality: the strange situation task (table 14. 1) Infant attachment quality: 4 types (table 14. 1: secure, resistant (anxious/ambivalent) (~10%, avoidant (up to 15%): don"t seek parent out and aren"t bothered by parent leaving them, disorganized/disoriented (up to 15%): strange reactions (sometimes secure/sometimes not) Parenting style (pg 445-446: secure: parents are sensitive and responsive to needs and emotional signals of infant, resistant: inconsistent (enthusiastic, then indifferent, often unresponsive)- depressed mothers, avoidant: too little/too much stimulation (intrusive, overzealous levels of stimulation).
