Pain returns ~8 hours or sooner, along with withdrawal symptoms: drug company discouraged from dosing every 8 hours. Selling point is that it lasts long. Recommended they increase dose instead of frequency: no smooth transition between doses. Pain/withdrawal symptoms + euphoric relief with meds = addiction. Alters brain structures that modulate pain: pain can harm you. Effective post-operative pain management enhances immune function.
