It is caused by lesions in the basal pons: this lesion interrupts motor pathways from the cortex to the brainstem and spinal cord (corticospinal tract, the person"s eye movements are intact and communicate by blinking. Sleep: all neurotransmitters we talk about (ne, acetylcholine, serotonin) are involved in the neurophysiology of sleep, except for dopamine. They took measurements taken in a sleep lab. Measurements/tests taken: electromyogram (emg) of the neck muscles, electrooculogram (eog) of eye muscles, electrocardiogram (ekg, galvanic skin response (gsr, measure of respiration rate, electroencephalogram (eeg) of brain.
