Stereotypes - beliefs people form about groups that become problematic when applied to individuals. Prejudice - a negative attitude is formed towards a certain group and its individual members. Discrimination - unfair treatment of members of a particular group based on prejudiced attitudes towards that group. Racial profiling - people are selected for investigation by law enforcement officers on the basis of race. Started off as explicit racism (de jure racism) Brown v board of education ruled it unconstitutional. Transition to implicit racism (de facto racism) Explicit/hostile sexism: antagonism towards women who challenge male power. Implicit/benevolent sexism: conceptualization of women as weak individuals who need to be protected and provided for.
