PSY 334 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Epigenetics, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Megavitamin Therapy
Document Summary
Icd- international classification of diagnoses (it"s for anything, not only psychiatric) Aren"t in dsm5, only co-morbid and then you specify. Dimensional (is about a spectrum; any psychiatric disorder can exit on a spectrum) vs. categorical. At first, it"s theoretical b/c it comes from a solid theory someone has built, the downside of theoretical is that there"s no evidence and doesn"t know how it"ll apply to the real world. Logical nosology is when you group people you see, kind of like inductive vs. deductive reasoning. The upside is that it works well, there"s evidence. However, the downside is that it might be too complex or consistent, or doesn"t apply to everybody. Person vs. label (too busy focusing on personal differences for a diagnosis to be made or to fit into a group) Description, not explanation (diagnosis isn"t an explanation, it"s a way of describing how a person can function in the world)
