Work: the carrying out of tasks that require the expenditure of mental & physical effort/ the activity by which pl produce from the natural world & so ensure their survival. Produce for survival vs. anything that takes effort. Economy: the system of production & exchange that provides for the material needs of individuals living in a given society. In contemporary industrial societies, most work in an occupation: any form of paid employment in which an individual regularly works. Humans societies exhibit 2 universal economic characteristics. A division of labor of various degrees of complexity. Division of labor: the specialization of work tasks by means of which different occupations are combined w/in a production system. In hunter gatherer societies, often expressed in gendered division in who hunts & who gathers. Under complex division of labor, this leads to economic interdependence ~ you will perish quickly in the event of a fundamental breakdown of the economy.
