Document Summary
Soc 248- lecture notes- lectures 14, 15- democracy. British democracy: american colonies and france were thought of as republics. He wasn"t sure about needing central ie fed govt. Passed on rule, organize an army, could rule with power of coercive force, had land, larger populations. Global examples of govt: authoritarian: absolute obedience to authority. Challenges of democracy: plagued by corruption, abuses of civil and human rights, guantanamo bay, racial inequality, authoritarian leaders can be democratically elected, doesn"t account for one or 2 party systems. One or 2 groups controlling political process, can lead to gridlock: role of lobbyists, big money in influencing govt. In us citizens united before supreme court said that lobbyists could donate unlimited amounts of money to politicians. Ie gridlock, govt shutdown, bipartisanship: short election cycle global inconsistency, voter disenfranchisement, rigged election. Don"t feel like your vote even matter, don"t think those in washington actually care. Could also feel it"s rigged: peaceful transfer of power.
