The form or system of rule by which a state is governed. Hard for people to select rulers and to balance the power. Becomes a basis for culture, national identity, religion, and language. U. s is considered one of the oldest democracies in the world. Ethical principles from basis of good government. Created laws and courts to rule on the people. King ceded the power to parliament of lords and elected representatives. Groups who have leaders that speak for them to other groups. Judge disputes, mark land, punish offenders, defend territory. A single leader exercises more central control, commanding armies, redistributes goods to those in need. When chiefs became permanent they passed on rule. Authoritarian (nazi germany 1933-1945) (north korea, latin america) Absolute: king and queen have complete power. Limited: king and queen answer to elders and nobles. Constitutional: monarchy is head of state but elected parliament.
