Therefore, she began researching the process, and produced a documentary that is highly praised and criticized. The documentary ended with ricki lake giving birth to her son in the bathtub of her. According to lake, this was indeed the experience that she was after. The movie argues that we as a society have become very reliant on the medical institution for births and that a lot of women have lost touch with what it means to give birth. We have lost touch with the practices that were prevalent during the 1st phase of childbirth. The experience of birth was shared among women (the mother and her relatives or neighbors). There was no assurance that the process was going to progress well.
