SOC 371 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: New York City Police Department, Separate Spheres, Gender Pay Gap
Document Summary
Civility meant keeping home and work life separate. Particularly white men outside of the house; women inside the house: some groups not fitting in either group, leads to inequality. We still see the consequences of this decades later. Reinforced stereotypes of men as caretakers of women, in particular among women. Not all families could fit this normative expectation. Reading 5: jobs for black men missing in action. There"s a wage gap between black and white men: persistent over time, likelihood that their families can be upwardly mobile is very low. If somehow we increase skill levels among black men in communities who are suffering as a group, the entire society gets better: people tend to live near people very similar to them, communities tend to aggregate. In places with high unemployment high rates of poverty high rates of crime high rates of incarceration.
