SOC 371 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Escalator
Document Summary
When men enter women"s jobs, the salaries increase. For some men who entered women"s jobs, they were stigmatized as if it was beneath them. Change in the way they dress (i. e nurses used to wear white skirts, now they wear gender neutral scrubs) When women enter men"s fields it doesn"t work this way: when women become police officers, they wear the same outfits as men, very masculine dress. Both in media and real life, women doing things that prior to 1980"s they wouldn"t have ever imagined to be doing. What"s actually going on when they get there: do they fair well, generally, it doesn"t work out evenly. There are many more women doctors proportionally in other countries than in the us: not as high status, salaries aren"t as high. As women enter men"s jobs, men are more likely to leave: salary either stabilize or stagnate. Women are generally more likely to be pediatricians, radiologists, etc.
