I CSI 124X Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Denial-Of-Service Attack, Malware
Document Summary
Many of the same functions that are useful in computer programs can be turned against us by malicious software (malware). The fundamental point is that a malicious piece of software does the same kinds of things that a legitimate one does. Application-based security attacks: if a malicious piece of software gets on your computer, it can use the computer"s own instructions and resources against you. Disk formatting: in order for your computer to read and write information for your disk drive, and to organize it as files and directories, it must be formatted properly. Malicious software can also reformat a disk drive: this will destroy information on the computer. It is lost if it has not been backed up: even if information is backed up, it takes a significant amount of time and effort to restore the disk from backup.
