Stress
• An adaptive response to environmental demands, referred to as stressors, that produce
adaptive responses that include:
o Physical
o Emotional
o Behavioral reactions
Good Stress
• Stress associated with positive emotions and outcomes called eustress
• Shows that:
o Stress is not merely nervous tension
o Stress can have positive consequences
o Stress is not something to be avoided
o The complete absence of stress is death
Occupational Stress
Potential Stressors
• Individual Level
• Group Level
• Organizational Level
• Extra-Organizational
Cognitive Appraisals
• Primary appraisals:
o Perceptions of whether a stressor is irrelevant, positive, or negative
• Secondary appraisals:
o Perceptions of how able you are to deal or cope with a given demand
Coping Strategies
• Control Strategy
• Escape Strategy
• Symptom Management Strategy
