Evidence for genetic contribution: what is inherited is a disposition to become anxious- form of anxiety that takes place is a function of environmental influences. You do not inherit anxiety; you inherit the tendency or predisposition for anxious behaviors or fearfulness. Neurotransmitters do play a role. Brain scans for children with ptsd and generalized anxiety disorder show brain abnormalities in sections that process fear. Page 131 in the text talks about the biological aspects and causes of anxiety disorders. Intrusive parenting (parenting practices play a role); over protection and overly involved parents can be negative. Insecure early attachment style: especially at risk if a child is the anxious/resistant type: the child might approach the parent but couldn"t be comforted by the parent in the strange situation test.
