At some point a crack will form. Crack begins to grow in the bulk of the metal. With crack present, fluid can flow into the crack. Crack length increases faster due to corrosion. Crack initiation phase:number of cycles that it takes for a crack to form. Crack propagation phase: number of cycles needed to grow the crack to a critical length. Fracture: last few cycles to go from critical crack length to failure. The amount of loading determines how long you spend in each stage. At same stress level, reduce cycles to failure in solution. A same # of cycles higher stress in air than in solution.
