BEN 468 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Surface Science, Biocompatibility, Biomaterial
Document Summary
High strength and/or low ductility polymers with high molecular weight. Polymers have ability to orient their chains -- randomly distribute within the side of the chain. Surfaces of biomaterials dictate the interaction with the biological environment. Then what do these cells see on the surface. If you have polymer wear it changes the surf. If you have polymer wear ti changes the surface which can have an a ect on mechanical and physical properties but more importantly it is somewhere in the body and those become new materials that interact with the body. Solid friction -- force that opposes motion when one material slides over another material; the resistance to movement of one solid body over another. Degrades the material -- change mechanical behavior, friction, and both things will a ect performance. Frictional force (ff) is proportional to the applied load (fl) Frictional force (ff) is independent of the apparent area of contact.
