Document Summary

Major histocompability complex: both class i and ii are highly polymorphic (exists in many diff. alleles) Class i mhc molecules: associated on cell membrane with protein 2- microglobulin. Class ii mhc molecules: heterodimeric glycoproteins with alpha/beta chain. Antigen interacts/activates mature t/b lymphocytes which brings expansion of the cells. Clonal selection of lymphocytes with same antigenic specificity as parent cell. Specificity: only lymphocytes with the correct, specific epitopes are expanded/mobilized. Self/non-self discrimination: elimination or suppression of self- reactive cells. Cell-mediated immunity | clonal proliferation of t lymphocytes into various effector t cells and memory t cells. Humoral immunity | clonal proliferation of b lymphocytes into plasma cells and memory b cells. Primary response: initial encounter with na ve lymphocyte: lag of 5-7 days before antibody levels rise, required for activation, proliferation, differentiation. Secondary response: later contact; more rapid/heightened due to amplified population of memory cells: lag is only 1-2 days.
