Determine and question person in charge on the scene. Find and interview people likely to leave: witnesses, relatives, friends of the victim. Talk with others at the scene (rescue crews, paramedics, medical examiner, etc. ) Determine how to get information to meet the first deadline. Pens and pencils - pencils actually work in wet/cold weather. Keep track of sots for quick cueing later. Get interviews lined up for live shots early on. If you have to go live before you"ve learned much of anything, a good interview can save you good interview can save you. Tell people what you know, and tell them what you don"t know. Don"t just ignore facts you don"t have - acknowledge you"re still trying to determine something . Never say anything bad that might be heard over the air.
