Play is central activity in the lives of all young children. Playing is the universal language for children: providing a context for communication, understanding catharsis. Play is a process through which children make sense of their world, practice for the future, and communicate feelings they may not be able to verbalize. Observing children at play can provide insight into how they are thinking and how they understand and cope with new experiences and new situations. Play can act as a distraction for children. It can also have a more direct role in helping children prepare for different medical procedures and in the recovery process: reducing stress, facilitating communication, and providing information for observant adults. Play with dolls, books, and some equipment in advance of a medical procedure can help moderate the fear of the unknown.
