How play is influenced by context and cultural factors. 2-way relationship between play and development: as one plays one develops and as one develops one plays. Play builds off on earlier play behaviors or experiences. Play development may be for the long term (ontogenesis) as new play abilities emerge with age. Play development may be in the short-term i. e. within a single play session (microgenesis) 3 main types of play identified in play literature. The creation of a play environment where children are encouraged to pick up objects, toys etc. and have fun with the objects. 4-12 months, sit reach for objects; some children start to walk by first birthday. 7-12 months manipulative skills increase; use hands and objects differently. By 12 months drop objects into container. By 19 months treat objects differently (e. g. , picture objects from 3-dimensional objects) Between 12-18 months delight in pop-up toys. 9-16 months exploration emerges: o(cid:271)je(cid:272)ts dire(cid:272)t i(cid:374)fa(cid:374)t"s i(cid:374)terest.
