-431-404 BCE -Longest war of Greeks -Involved pretty much everyone in Greece -Mostly near Sparta -- Peloponnesus -Historian: Thucydides -Sparta & Peloponnesian League -Alliances w/ Pelop. states -No tribute, but collective war fund -Pelop. states = land-powers -Powerful allies: Thebes & Corinth -Corinth = commercial naval state -Spartan suspicions of Athenian power -Archidamian War (431-421 BCE) -Archidamus, king of Sparta -Annual ravaging of Attica: burn crops, destroy homes, etc. -Basically every year for 10 years -Pericles' strategy -Avoid land battles -Raid coastal areas -Pericles' "funeral oration" (winter 431/BCE ) -Plague @ Athens: 430, 429, 427 BCE -Pericles died :( -Financial strains on Athens: capital tax, reassessment of tributes -Various revolts/rebellions against Athens -Brasidas (Spartan) & Cleon (Athenian) -Don't want peace -Both die @ Battle of Amphipolis, 422 BCE -Amphipolis = fort near Black Sea, important for food; Athens loses -Peace of Nici
