In 1840, 2. 5m slaves in the united states. South is the richest part of the united states. Many don"t own slaves, but believe they will someday. Slavery allows poor whites to claim superiority over slaves and blacks regardless of whether they own any slaves at all. Assume they or someone they know (family or friend) will own a slave someday. Society bound by fear because of the real possibility of slave rebellion. Series of slave revolts creates a climate of fear in the south. North is giving up alcohol and fighting (turning away from unnecessary violence) Ministers in south realize if they raise consciousness that it is a threat to economy and society. If they encourage people to do good and get right with the world then people will be influenced to become anti-slavery. Religious culture based upon focusing upon vice and sin. Ministers begin defending slavery to keep their jobs.
