NSD 225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Nutrient Density, Bone Density, Folic Acid
Document Summary
Pregnancy nutrition: don"t smoke or drink, cut down on caffeine, gain 25-30lbs. Critical period: events that occur only at that time. Don"t want: low birth weight (under 5. 5lbs) have good nutrition! Nutrition deficiencies: women of childbearing age need . 4mg of folic acid per day to reduce risk of neural tube defects. Mother conserves iron during pregnancy because menstruation ceases and absorption is increased. However very few females have adequate iron stores and pregnant woman needs extra iron to increase her blood volume, store iron in fetal liver (baby should have enough to last 36 mo) and mother will lose blood during delivery. Weight gain should be in second half of pregnancy. Ideas change about weight gain- perhaps 2 -4 lbs during first 3 mo and a lb a week thereafter. This is if the pregnant woman starts out at ideal weight. If she was underweight, she should gain more; if overweight, then less.
