What is language: complex system of rules for combining different kinds of elements, generatvity: you have a finite amount of words in language but you can express an infinite amount of meanings with it. What do we use symbols for: representation: feelings, behaviors etc, communication: expressing things that are in the past, future, present, not in the current time/place. Which comes first: comprehension: understanding what is being said to you, then production: ability to produce speech, *kids learn much earlier than they can produce it; related to motor development of speaking mechanisms. 4 components of language: phonological development: sound systems, phonemes: unit of sound/each language has it"s own (ex: rake v. lake; ch , r , Er etc. : semantic development, morphemes: meaning (ex: dog v. dogs 1 v. many, syntactic development, syntax: arrangement/orders of words, pragmatic development, metalinguistic knowledge: how you know about language.
