Children who display persistent, age-inappropriate symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are sufficient to cause impairment in major life activities. Generated enormous media attention; referred to as most controversial mental disorder. Previously was named add, changed in the dsm. Adhd is one of the most commonly diagnosed behavioral conditions in children. Shown in 2 or more settings o: displayed for at least 6months o. More likely to display problems with inhibition behavioral persistence aggressiveness, defiance, peer rejection, school suspension, placement in special education class. Subtypes: predominantly inattentive presentation (adhd-pi) mostly inattention symptoms o. 6 or more symptoms in inattention: predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentation (adhd-hi) mostly hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms o. 6 or more symptoms in hyperactivity-impulsivity: combined presentation (adhd-c) - both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptom o. 6 or more symptoms in hyperactivity-impulsivity and inattention. Etiology | adhd is complex/chronic disorder of brain, behavior, development (specific causes not known) Measures of brain activity: under-responsiveness to stimuli, blood flow is decreased to certain regions.
