Soc 101 - week 4 - race and ethnicity. When meaning, understanding, identity categories, and customers are determined and maintained through social interaction with other human beings. The basic indivisible unit of all social interaction - the individual - which is of course something that all of us can relate to, because we all have a self. Are you different with your friends, family, professors, classmates, etc. Ex: your boyfriend calls and you say hey. that hey has a different connotation than they hey when your mom calls. Determined through social context and social interaction. Ex: an infant is born into isolation and somehow survives without parents and human interaction. A person without social interaction would have no self. Ex: you are working at a desk job. You work hard at it and think you are going to advance in this job because you believe you are doing everything perfectly.
