Document Summary

Soc 101 - week 7 - sexuality and gender / the medicating of society. Sex is biologically determined, but gender is almost entirely socially constructed. What we consider to be female or male behavior is determined at the societal level, and varies across cultures and evolves over time. Social construction starts the minute a boy or girl wrapped in a pink or blue banket when they are born. It may even start earlier, given baby shower culture and gender reveals. Gender identity and sexual identity are different. Gender identity: refers to your understanding of yourself and who you feel most comfortable being. This is true for race too - your skin tone is biological, but the way you perceive people with different skin tones is entirely socially constructed. Sexual identity: refers to what type of person you are attracted to. This is who you would date and/or marry. Gene regulation may explain how homosexuality flourishes.
