Soc 101: intro to sociology- lecture 17: deviance and crime. Stigma= any physical or social attribute that devalues a person"s social identity and disqualifies the person from full social acceptance. Social control= systematic practices that social groups develop to encourage conformity and discourage deviance. = internal social control: one"s ability to control personal deviances and conform to society. = external social control: when one is controlled by society. Sociological perspective= focus on social context, not individual behavior. = recognize not all behaviors are judged similarly by all groups. Incest: some groups consider it normal, while most of society considers it a bad behavior. = emphasizes how rules and norms are socially created. Smoking marijuana~ once was accepted, then laws were made to control the use, and now is once again being accepted. Deviance rooted in societal factors (i. e. rapid social change, lack of social integration) : clarify rules (shows how one should act in public)
