Concept of social movement: five elements of a social movement: Prison rebellion: (1) collective action, (2) an orientation toward change, (3) a degree of organization, (4) a degree of temporal continuity, (5) non-institutional action (i. e. , protesting in the streets) and/or. Causes of prison riots: riots occur for a variety of reasons: Indifferent prison administration: neglect of prisoner demands, dehumanizing prison conditions, mistreatment by guards, unnatural prison society, rivalries among prisoner groups. Attica: roots of an insurrection: uprising began september 9, 1971, spurred by, horrific prison conditions, political protest and organizing outside/inside, the death of george jackson, an incident in the yard, lasted five days, prison guards taken as hostages. April 12, 2017: outsider mediation group, uprising ended september 13, 1971, rockefeller ordered in state troopers & national guard, 39 people killed in the retaking of the prison including 10 guards.
