Document Summary

Authority: not something you have, but it comes from your standing in the social structure. Early socialization: we are socialized to obey authority and get rewarded for doing so. Trappings of authority: status of the institution: yale, complex, experience, equipment, experimenter"s clothing: white coat, experimenter"s gender: male. All of these things service peripheral cues. Blinding forces: perceived lack of knowledge/expertise to critique practice, afraid of confrontation. This experiment measures the fine line between persuasion and cohesion. 2009 burger conducted similar experiment, modified for ethical standards of today. Found similar results in terms of compliance numbers: milgram = 82% compliant at 150 volts, burger = 70% compliant at 150 volts. Studies do not account for differences in race/ethnicity (all white people). Helps explain how/why ordinary people who are not cruel by nature find themselves doing crazy and violent acts. Also shed light on conformity not just during war time, but in political and organizational contexts.
