COMM 325 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Gunny Sack, Situational Ethics, Yelp
Document Summary
Normative theories of ethics in perloff and the present approach. The role of receivers/persuadees: reasoned skepticism, balancing between extremes, you don"t just soak up arguments. Try and find other arguments and compare them: reject gut level reactions to outlets/candidates/messages. You cannot be too skeptical, but you cannot be too open minded either. Not being able to challenge, testing them and asking different questions. How do we provide appropriate feedback: it is a response to the message. It can be verbal or nonverbal, immediate or delayed, oral/written: it can be more than a yes or no response. Do not gunny sack (unload emotional burdens to someone at once). Examples of providing appropriate feedback: yelp, rate my professor, student evaluations, tips, after interview feedback, beta testing, etc. Just because a message comes form a particular place does not mean it is automatically untruthful/tainted, etc. The opposite of common sense (gut level reaction).
