Document Summary

Identity: how we make sense of who we are in the world. Identity is our self concept or who we think we are as a person. We can have multiple identities: identities are created in spurts. Identity shifts in critical moments: identities are multiple, identities are influenced by society. Media can put out evaluations of certain identity. It is easier to be one identity than another. Depends on what part you are at: identities are dynamic. They change over time: identities are developed different ways in different cultures. Communication is more successful when the people involved conforms to the identity of the other: ex: teenager with their mother. Gender identity: socially contrasted set of values based on sex. Hermaphroditic male and female: ex: micro penis turning into a vagina, social construction within reason. Age identity: teenage example, prof being older than the students, how you see yourself different from others based on your age.
