Materials adjacent to one another need a joint, or some wiggle room for expansion. Any materials making a 90-degree bend, has a joint, creating a weak point. Pick a material that is made for water. However, technology vanished after the fall of the roman empire. Reinforcement: embedding steel into concrete to create a stronger system. Translucent concrete: pull out some of the aggregates and replace them with glass fibers, allowing the passage of light while still being structural. Specifications supersede the construction drawings in a court of law. If the drawings and specs ever clash, do what the specs say. Construction specifications institute (csi): concrete is division 3. For example: large and tall buildings are built out of concrete instead of wood because you can"t get everyone out of a large 6 story building in time if made out of wood. Cement is the glue that holds all of the parts together.
