COSC 253 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hygroscopy, Fiberglass, Clearcutting
Document Summary
There are many sustainable forest techniques, certified by the forestry stewardship council (fsc). The fsc plants more than we use every year. Fsc lumber is counted toward leed points for a building. Voc: volatile organic compound, materials used to make the lumber. The direction of the long axes of wood cells is referred to as the grain/fibers of the wood. Wood is hygroscopic which means it is expands and contracts and shrinks with moisture. Wood in a living tree is green, that is, it contains a large amount of water. If green lumber is used in construction it will shrink as it dries out. To minimize shrinkage, lumber should be seasoned (dried) before installation. Wood is generally stronger in compression than it is in tension. Structural composite lumber (scl): encompasses all of the engineered types of lumber, general term. Glued laminated (glulam) structural members are fabricated from layers of wood that are bonded by glue.
