INTS 407 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: The Main Point, Situation Two, Jean-Paul Sartre
Document Summary
Lecture (4/1/16) situations of the colonized (90-118) The colonial situation produces real inadequacy in the colonized. The colonized is removed from history and from the community (91: the colonized have been denied the freedom to act in the world as well as to exercise cultural and social responsibility. Oppressed members of free countries have at least a potential, if not realized, right to act/elect: they have memories of historical moments when the people exercises their freedom. The idea of the orient/oriental is created by the west. The colonized feel the impossibility of revolt: all memory of freedom seems distant . The colonizers accuse the colonized of cowardice because they tolerate oppression: the colonizers" courage comes from the knowledge that they have the military force of the mother country behind them should the need arise. Media: the colonized are denied access to resistance films : films might demonstrate that revolt is possible even by unarmed oppressed people.
