Keith Owen 2/6/14 PSYC 107 Consciousness Consciousness  Awareness of the outside world and of one’s own mental processes, thoughts, feelings,  and perceptions.  Aware of other things about themselves. States of Consciousness  Variations in what mental processes occur. o Wakefulness o Sleep o Drug and alcohol­induced states o Hypnosis Sleep  Sleep is a behavior and an altered state of consciousness.  We spend about a third of our lives in sleep. o A basic issue is to understand the function of sleep.  Sleep laboratories Circadian Rhythms  Many of our behaviors display rhythmic variation. o Circadian Rhythms  One cycle lasts about 24 hours (e.g. sleep­waking cycle).  Light is an external cue that can set the circadian rhythm.
