Stress= anything that arises from limitations to cope effectively, response to stressor. Stressors= events that trigger a stress response; tension/arousal of being able to cope w/ things effectively. Stress as stimulus: focusing on what causes stress: school, health, relationships. Pregnant women, college freshman handle stress worse than other groups. Stress as response: fatigue, nightmares, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, hostility. Aren"t always negative: positive reactions: after 9/11, people/groups united. Corticosteroids= steroid hormones produced in the adrenal cortex or made synthetically that have metabolic functions. Stress as transaction: primary and secondary appraisals, coping. Primary- decide you won"t be affected by paris attacks. Secondary- you are affected, now need to decide how to cope. Problem focused- figure out why you got bad grade on exam, figure out what you need to do differently. Emotion focused- after getting dumped, rationalize to decrease/cover up the amount of impact it has on you blame everything on other person.
